The Real Reason Women’s Shirts Button Differently from Men’s

Most people never notice that women’s shirts fasten from the left and men’s from the right, or realize that this difference was born from inequality. For wealthy women in the 18th and 19th centuries, dressing was a performance of status. Their garments were so elaborate that they needed maids to help them. Because most servants were right-handed, placing buttons on the wearer’s left made dressing faster and easier—for the maid, not the woman being dressed. That “small convenience” became a lasting code, signaling refinement, luxury, and dependence.

Men’s clothing followed a completely different logic. With weapons often carried on the left hip for a right-handed draw, right-side buttons let men unfasten their coats quickly in moments of danger or urgency. As military style filtered into everyday life, this arrangement hardened into a symbol of readiness and masculine control. Today, we may no longer wear swords or employ maids, but every shirt still carries this quiet divide—an overlooked reminder that our most ordinary habits are shaped by old hierarchies we rarely question.
