Fashion trends have become increasingly flexible, with many styles no longer restricted by gender. However, one small detail remains surprisingly consistent: the placement of buttons on clothing. Most women’s shirts have buttons on the left side, while men’s shirts place them on the right. Although many people never notice this difference, historians believe it dates back hundreds of years and may reflect social customs from a very different era.
One of the most accepted explanations comes from the Middle Ages, when buttons were considered luxury items. Wealthy women often relied on maids to help them dress, and since most people were right-handed, placing buttons on the left made fastening garments easier for someone standing opposite them. Men, on the other hand, usually dressed themselves, making right-side buttons more practical and convenient.
Another theory is linked to military traditions. Historically, many men carried swords or firearms and needed quick access to them. Right-side button placement may have made it easier to open coats or jackets while keeping the dominant hand free. Some historians also suggest that as women’s fashion began incorporating masculine styles in the late nineteenth century, opposite button placement helped distinguish female clothing from male attire.
Today, this “button differential” remains a standard feature in much of the fashion industry, even though its original purpose has largely disappeared. Many people are surprised when they first learn about it, and some view it as a reminder of historical gender roles. While a few modern brands are moving away from this tradition, most clothing manufacturers continue to follow the centuries-old convention.
