You Can Stop Your Microwave from Beeping—Here’s How

Ever wish you could silence your microwave? Good news: Microwave silent mode exists.

In our kitchen at home, there’s a lot going on. Depending on the time of day, I’ll find parents or siblings using the oven, air fryer and microwave, all making separate meals—along with about six different timers going off, all signaling different things. Needless to say, it’s easy to lose patience with the constant noise.

The most irritating sound in your kitchen probably comes from the microwave timer. If today’s a day where you can’t handle the beeping, here’s how to mute your microwave.

See all the microwave tricks that cooks need to know.

How to Silence a Microwave

On one hand, timers and alarms are important. They signal that a task has finished, letting you know that your microwave mug cake is ready to serve. On the other hand, sometimes noise is the last thing we need. It’s helpful to have the option of turning off any incessant beeping. For that reason, microwave silent mode exists.

There are a few ways to deactivate the sound of microwave timers and button presses.

Look for the Sound button

This is the method I can vouch for. Look for a button with a sound or speaker icon, or one that simply says “sound.” It seems almost too obvious, but some models make the job that easy. Press the button and the beeping will turn off.

Hold down the 0 or 1 buttons

According to CNET, you can press and hold down the 0 button, the 1 button or the button that says “stop.” These buttons may have secret functions programmed by the manufacturers to help you turn off your microwave’s beeps.

Check the user manual

The last step is to go through the manual or manufacturer’s guide that came with your microwave. Chances are there’s a simple way to deactivate the sound that accompanies your microwave’s timer. You may just have to do a little reading or consult the internet to find it.

If all this time spent fidgeting with your microwave has brought you close to food spatters, it might be time to clean your appliance. Here’s the best way to clean your microwave.
