Your Toaster Is Grosser Than You Think (Here’s How to Fix That)

You don’t need special cleaners or complicated hacks to make your toaster safe and fresh again. Unplug it and let it cool. Slide out the crumb tray, wash it with warm soapy water, and dry it completely. Turn the toaster upside down over the sink or trash and gently shake out the hidden debris. A soft pastry brush or clean paintbrush will coax out the stubborn crumbs clinging to the interior, without scratching metal or damaging heating elements.

Then give the outside the attention it never gets. Wipe the exterior with a barely damp cloth, adding a drop of dish soap if there’s grease or fingerprints, and dry it immediately. Follow the grain on stainless steel to avoid streaks. Do a quick crumb-tray dump every week or two, and a full clean about once a month.
