What looked like a supernatural gateway glowing in the clouds was almost certainly a fallstreak hole, sometimes called a hole‑punch cloud. These rare formations occur in mid‑level cloud layers filled with supercooled water droplets—liquid water hanging in the air even though the temperature is below freezing. All it takes is a small trigger to flip that delicate balance.
