Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen were only nine months old when they began playing Michelle Tanner on Full House, alternating in the role while growing up in front of millions of viewers. Their childhood quickly became a business empire, and the twins eventually became two of the most recognizable young stars in America.
But Mary-Kate later described that childhood in strikingly different terms. Looking at old photographs, she told Marie Claire that she didn’t feel connected to them and described herself and Ashley as “little monkey performers.” After years of television, movies, and enormous public attention, the sisters gradually stepped away from acting and turned their attention toward fashion. Instead of continuing to build careers around their childhood fame, they chose a direction that would eventually transform how the fashion industry viewed them.
