Christa Pike’s lawyer shares update on her condition following botched execution

According to the report, Tennessee’s attempt to execute 50-year-old Christa Pike on September 30 left her receiving lifesaving hospital care. She was sentenced to death for the 1995 murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, a fellow Job Corps student. Attorney Randy Spivey described repeated difficulties establishing intravenous access, following earlier warnings from Pike’s lawyers about a blood disorder. He said witnesses could still hear her breathing more than an hour after the procedure began.

Her attorneys are seeking commutation to life imprisonment, calling the ordeal cruel and traumatic. The Tennessee Department of Correction maintains that staff followed the state’s approved execution protocol. Governor Bill Lee, however, described the outcome as deeply disturbing, commissioned an outside investigation and postponed Tennessee’s remaining scheduled execution for 2026. For now, the central questions remain unanswered: why the procedure failed, what harm Pike suffered and whether she will recover. Her lawyers say her long-term condition is unknown.
