Your Mother Wasn’t Joking—There Really Was a Time When Television Channels Shut Down Every Night

Yes, Television Really Did Shut Down at Night!

Your mother was telling the truth.

During the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s, many American television stations ended their broadcasts around midnight or shortly afterward.

This tradition was known as a television sign-off.

What Happened Before the Screen Went Dark?

A typical sign-off included an announcement identifying the television station and informing viewers when broadcasting would resume.

Many stations then played the national anthem, often accompanied by images of the American flag or famous American landmarks.

Afterward, viewers might see a test pattern, color bars, or the familiar black-and-white static known as television snow.

Why Did Stations Stop Broadcasting?

The reasons were surprisingly practical.

There wasn’t enough programming to fill 24 hours, relatively few people watched television overnight, and keeping broadcasting equipment operating cost money.

The overnight break also provided opportunities for equipment maintenance.

When Did Everything Change?

During the 1980s and 1990s, around-the-clock broadcasting became increasingly common.

Cable television, overnight news, infomercials, and changing viewing habits helped make nightly sign-offs largely a thing of the past.

A Memory That Still Brings Back Nostalgia

For people who grew up during that era, hearing the national anthem before bedtime remains a memorable part of television history.

There was once a time when the television itself seemed to tell everyone it was time to go to sleep.

Do you remember watching the national anthem before television went off the air? What decade did you grow up in?
