Alan Alda Reveals the Unusual Sleep Habit That Helped Him Discover Parkinson’s Disease

For decades, Alan Alda brought laughter and unforgettable performances to millions of television viewers. Best known for playing Hawkeye Pierce on MASH*, the beloved actor became a familiar face in American households. But behind the scenes, Alda experienced something unusual that eventually led him to seek medical advice. Surprisingly, it wasn’t the trembling hands or difficulty walking that many people associate with Parkinson’s disease.

The first warning appeared while he was sleeping. One night, Alda dreamed that someone was attacking him and that he needed to defend himself. In his dream, he grabbed a sack of potatoes and threw it toward the attacker. But when he woke up, he realized something startling had happened in the real world. Instead of throwing potatoes, he had physically thrown a pillow at his wife, Arlene.

What seemed like an ordinary nightmare was actually a clue to a neurological condition — and it helped lead Alda toward a diagnosis he hadn’t expected.

Alan Alda later explained that his unusual nighttime behavior was consistent with a condition known as REM sleep behavior disorder. During normal REM sleep, the body’s muscles are largely prevented from moving, even while the brain produces vivid dreams. In people with this disorder, that protective muscle relaxation may not function properly, allowing them to move, shout, kick, or physically act out their dreams while remaining asleep.

The condition is particularly important because research has identified an association between REM sleep behavior disorder and certain neurological diseases, including Parkinson’s disease. However, experiencing unusual dreams or moving during sleep does not automatically mean someone has Parkinson’s. Many different sleep disturbances can cause nighttime movements, and a proper medical evaluation is necessary to determine what is happening. Alda became concerned after learning about the connection and sought professional advice.

In 2015, doctors diagnosed Alda with Parkinson’s disease. He later spoke publicly about his experience, explaining that he wanted people to understand that life does not end with such a diagnosis. Parkinson’s can affect movement, coordination, and everyday activities, but symptoms and progression vary considerably between individuals. Alda has continued discussing the importance of staying active, remaining engaged with life, and approaching challenges with patience and humor.

One of the most touching parts of his story involves his relationship with his wife, Arlene. The couple married in 1957 and have shared decades of memories, laughter, and challenges. Alda has described finding humor even in frustrating moments, including when involuntary hand movements interfere with using his computer. His experience offers an important reminder: repeated dream-enacting behavior, especially when it causes injury or disrupts sleep, deserves medical attention. Recognizing unusual symptoms early can help people receive appropriate evaluation and support.

Have you ever heard that physically acting out dreams can sometimes be associated with neurological conditions?
