A crowded power strip can turn everyday convenience into a fire risk. Behind the television or beneath a desk, familiar plugs can hide a dangerous mismatch between what an appliance demands and what the strip can handle. Before you connect another heater, kitchen appliance, or essential device, check the limits that could keep your home and family safe tomo… Continues…
Power strips add outlets, not electrical capacity. Space heaters, electric grills, cookers, and other high-wattage kitchen appliances should connect directly to suitable wall outlets, following manufacturer instructions. Refrigerators, washing machines, and air conditioners may require dedicated circuits; a strip is no substitute. High-demand power tools, laser printers, and photocopiers also need connections that meet their manufacturers’ requirements. Never plug one power strip into another: those extra sockets do not increase the load the original connection can safely carry.Aquarium and medical equipment deserve particular care, but neither category supports a blanket rule against every power strip. For aquariums, follow equipment instructions, use GFCI protection and drip loops, and keep connections dry. For CPAP machines, oxygen concentrators, and other medical devices, follow the manufacturer’s power-supply requirements. Check every strip’s rating and combined load, and stop using damaged or overheating strips. Even separate wall outlets can share one circuit. When uncertain, ask a qualified electrician.
