Why Do Escalators Have Those Little Brushes Along the Sides

Millions of people ride escalators every day without giving much thought to the small brushes running along their sides. At first glance, they might look like miniature shoe cleaners, but that’s not their main purpose.

Those seemingly ordinary bristles are actually part of the escalator’s passenger-safety design.

What Are the Brushes For?
